Floods and landslides kill 25 across Kashmir and north-east India

Days of heavy monsoon rain brought flash floods to Indian-administered Kashmir and landslides to Nagaland.

Over the weekend of 18–19 July, heavy monsoon rain caused floods and landslides across north and north-east India. In Indian-administered Kashmir, rain-related incidents in the Poonch, Rajouri and Doda districts killed at least 15 people. In Nagaland, landslides killed nine.

Army personnel and emergency teams rescued 11 people, including five children. Forecasters warned more extremely heavy rain was likely in Jammu and Kashmir.

Mountains and monsoon

In mountain areas, heavy rain can turn streams into torrents within hours. Flash floods wash away roads, homes and the pipes that bring water to villages.

A few days later, floods in Assam displaced around 700,000 people as the Brahmaputra overflowed.

What preparation changes

  • Warning: alerts that reach mountain villages before floodwater does.
  • Health: safe water while pipes are repaired.
  • Safety: homes built away from the paths of flash floods.
