In mid-July, the UN reported cholera spreading to new areas of Sudan’s Darfur and Kordofan regions. New cases were confirmed in a displacement camp in South Darfur, and Tawila in North Darfur reported its first suspected case. West Kordofan had the highest number of cases.
Sudan had only declared its previous cholera epidemic over in March 2026. That outbreak infected 124,418 people and killed 3,573 across all 18 states.

Gaza: water every day in doubt
On the same day, UNICEF said 1.1 million children in Gaza faced uncertain access to water. Some 82% of households were water insecure, and up to 70% of people couldn’t collect the minimum six litres a day for drinking and cooking.
In both places, war has damaged the pumps, pipes and power that keep water clean.
What safe water changes in conflict
- Health: clean water and chlorine stop cholera spreading.
- Children: fewer hours fetching water, more time safe.
- Recovery: water systems protected and repaired.
